As one of the most unique Key West restaurants and bar, Blue Heaven needs to be on everyone’s must-visit list. Located in the Bahama Village area in Old Town, Blue Heaven greets guests with an open courtyard, backyard style dining area. Cats and chickens wander about on the ground and the central bar is a water tower.
Don’t let the whimsical decor and casual outdoor atmosphere fool you— the food is seriously good. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served daily, but they do close down for a few weeks during slow season, so check beforehand. You’ll be able to find delicious Jamaican Jerk chicken, fresh local seafood, mouthwatering cheeseburgers and a world famous key lime pie.
For those that crave a bit of history, we're happy to oblige. And what a story they have to tell! A hundred years ago or so it was in the business of selling "spirits" to the locals and through the years was a local venue for gambling, cock fighting and the weekly Friday Night boxing matches, with the referee, at times, being Ernest Hemingway!
Furthermore, it was also an ice cream house and a pool hall, on the first floor. The second floor was a bit on the more elicit side of the business, operating a bordello and a playhouse. Peep holes can still be found in many of the small rooms.
Move up to the 1990's, artists and writer, Suanne and Richard, respecively, bought the property with no money to put down and "mom's" cookbook and away they went. They lived the Key West life, living on a houseboat on Christmas Tree Island and motored to the island daily. The two slowly began building up their lunch business. A year or so later, Richards brother Dan (a formally trained chef, at that) got involved and away they went.
The menu never really changes, even seasonally, so that fantastic meal you had on your last trip, will certainly be on the menu on your next venture. Not to mention their FAMOUS mile high Key Lime Pie!
