The Florida Keys are home to a national treasure: the only living coral reef in the continental United States. This year, Mote Marine Laboratory is inviting locals and visitors alike to step out of the daily grind and into the blue at Ocean Fest, a high-energy, family-friendly celebration of our marine environment.
What began over a decade ago as a small gathering in a parking lot has evolved into a massive open-air festival. Spilling across the field at the entrance of Southard Street, Ocean Fest is now a cornerstone event for anyone who loves the ocean.
More Than Just a Festival
Ocean Fest isn’t just about soaking up the sun; it’s about highlighting the critical restoration work happening right beneath the waves. As water quality and marine health become top priorities for the Keys community, the festival serves as a bridge between world-class researchers and the public.

What to Expect:

- The Kid Zone: Located at the Eco-Discovery Center, this area features hands-on activities and the ever-popular water slide.

- The Mechanical Shark: A festival favorite! Test your balance on this aquatic spin on the classic mechanical bull.
Become a Citizen Scientist
One of the most impactful parts of Ocean Fest is the invitation to join the team. Through citizen science programs, residents can contribute real data to Mote researchers.
Did you know? You can help monitor coral bleaching—a process where stressed corals expel algae and turn white—by reporting observations from your own boating and diving trips.
By attending speaker sessions in the festival theater, you can learn how to turn your weekend hobby into a vital contribution to marine science.
The Reef: Our Natural Shield
Community Engagement Coordinator Taylor Berard emphasizes that protecting the reef isn't just about ecology—it’s about safety. During Hurricane Irma in 2017, the reef tract acted as a massive buffer. While waves at Looe Key topped 20 feet, the waters closer to shore remained significantly calmer thanks to the reef’s protection.
"It’s definitely one of the most important parts of the coral reef and why we need to protect what is left out there," Berard notes.

As an independent, nonprofit research organization, Mote relies on the generosity of the community.
