Want to visit Florida in the summer, but worried about hurricanes….. statistically, there is an extremely low risk that a storm will impact your vacation.
On average, only one or two will make landfall on the US east coast each year. Since 1851 (166 years), 37 have made direct hits on Florida. There is little to no correlation between the total number of storms and those that make landfall in any given season. For example, 2010 was an extremely busy season, with 19 named storms and 12 hurricanes. Yet not one hurricane and only one tropical storm, made landfall in the US that year.
Hurricanes are a fact of life in Florida, even before the first report of a tropical cyclone in 1523 that struck off the west coast of the state. Hurricane season is recognized as June 1st through November 30th with September being peak, followed by August, October, July & November each being about the same for activity.
